The Use Of Mechanized Forces


Modern technology has been used by the military in every aspect of service. The industrial age brought about the use of the automobile and motorized vehicles which the modern military has capitalized on with the mechanization of its military. All branches of the military have been mechanized but in this article we will talk about the use of ground troops as a mechanized force. The Army and Marine Corps use two types of ground forces. They are light and mechanized forces. Originally all forces were light in that they walked wherever they went to fight. There are many disadvantages to this and some advantages but the bad probably outweighs the good in most cases. Light infantry soldiers cant carry very much firepower and in addition they have to walk when they travel although sometimes they are transported in light vehicles. The disadvantages of this are that it takes them a while to move from one point to another. If they have to travel long distances on foot they may be fatigued by the time they arrive at their destination, and they have to carry their food, water, and equipment with them.

Mechanized forces are heavier in that they utilize armored vehicles which can pack a powerful punch. These vehicles are used as weapons systems when they arrive at their destination thus giving the troops inside added firepower. Troops can fight from inside of the vehicles that they ride in or Dismount and fight on foot. They can also carry extra food, water, ammunition, and equipment with them in the Armored Personnel Carriers. Many times the armored carriers will be utilized to provide covering fire for the troops inside of it once they arrive at their objective and dismount.

Infantry troops can be moved very rapidly across the battlefield as the requirements for combat change. They can be quickly moved to the place where firepower is needed at a particular time. If necessary they can be loaded up and rapidly transported to a different part of the battlefield.

The armored carriers which mechanized troops ride in protect them from the effects of enemy small arms fires as they are being transported across the battlefield which insures that more of them will survive the experience and arrive at the objective alive. The personnel carriers will utilize weapons systems which have longer ranges than the small arms which the infantry troops carry with them so they are able to engage the enemy force long before the ground troops aboard are able.

Once the personnel carrier has arrived on the objective it can engage it with its organic weapons. If need be the troops aboard can dismount and maneuver around the objective in order to take it out. If they can neutralize it without dismounting they will be able to move on to the next objective more quickly.

The strengths of mechanized forces far outweigh the weaknesses but there are some weaknesses which are inherent to their use. Mechanized forces cannot move about freely in mountainous or heavily wooded terrain. When they operate in these slow go areas they have to follow roads or other trails which makes them vulnerable to ambush. When obstacles are added to slow going terrain they can effectively create choke points which will cause entire columns of mechanized forces to slow to a crawl or stop. When this is the case they can be destroyed rather easily. When an armored personnel carrier is hit by enemy fire and destroyed with troops inside, the result is multiple friendly casualties. When light infantry troops are spread out over the ground they are harder to kill.

Mechanized vehicles require a large amount of fuel because of their size and weight. They also require specialty people to keep them maintained. Troops who operate them also need to be specially trained in whatever job that they are required to perform on the equipment. Military Ring Express
